Finding myself in Lost Angeles

Brown Carpet Event tonight.

So tonight kicks off the Middle Eastern Comedy Festival here in Los Angeles.  I’m pretty excited.  I was thinking to myself earlier and realized that this is actually the first comedy festival I’ve ever been to or performed in.  I’ve performed in music festivals but never in a comedy one so I’m excited.  I guess this will be a fun first step.  Especially since it is their first year doing the festival as well.

They are starting things off tonight with a Brown Carpet Event (instead of red carpet…very clever right?).  I just found out that I can go so I’m going to head up to the Laugh Factory in Hollywood to see how things go on the inaugural night.

My show is tomorrow night at the ACME theater at 135 N. La Brea in Hollywood.  The theater was built by hand by Adam Carolla which I think is pretty damn awesome.  I’m going to make sure to check his craftsmanship.  :)

Thursday I have an audition for CBS’ Head of Comedy Development.  I’m a little excited and a little anxious.  They want a one minute monologue done in one or multiple characters.  I am thinking about doing a chunk of my stand up or something but I don’t really know what characters to pull out of my ass.  I usually leave these things to the last minute and then the fight or flight will kick in and suddenly it will all come to me in a moment of blurry brilliance right before I fall asleep the night before.  Then i second-guess myself in the waiting room and act like a total buffoon in the audition.  hahaha.  Oh what a strange career I’ve chosen.

I’ve been speaking with the guys at Comedy Juice and it looks as though I’ll be hosting one of their shows coming up on Oct. 8th.  That should be fun.  They are the best show in town in my humble opinion.  Well them and Jay Davis’ Life of the Party.  Those are the two shows I want to be a part of in the next year or two.

I’m also in Uncle Clyde’s Comedy Competition at the IceHouse in Pasadena which is just an amazing comedy club.  It used to be a folk club that acts like the Smothers Brothers and Steve Martin used to frequent a lot back in the 70’s before comedy clubs even existed.  Now they are a full fledged comedy club (probably since folk music is much less popular now and comedy is probably much more mainstream).  If nothing else, i like their business model.  :)

My next show in Clyde’s comedy contest will be October 14th.  First place gets paid and third place gets french fries.  But winning this thing could open up some pretty huge doors for me including getting represented by some NACA managers/agents.  NACA does the major booking for most colleges and I think they do cruise ships as well.  It would be amazing to start doing the NACA circuit.  Fingers crossed on this one.

I keep putting off reading my script for Circumstance but I need to get this thing read at least 10 more times before we film next month.  I’m growing my hair out for the part and playing around with different facial hair patterns that I think would fit the character.  I also like making a nice iTunes playlist for my characters too.  Just something that I think the character would be listening to.  Ugh…so much work to do!  I need to buckle down.  I’m most excited for this movie because I’ll be filming in Beirut, Lebanon and I’ve never left the country (other than Canada and Mexico).  So I’ll finally get a stamp on my passport!  My passport has been accidentally dropped in the toilet more times than it’s actually been used at an airport.

Thanks for reading my first update on this thing.  As long as I don’t screw anything up between now and when I click PUBLISH.

My new website should be up by the end of the year.  I’ll keep everyone posted on that.  It’s looking pretty cool so far.  I’ve got a really talented web guy working on it.

Have a great week!

Sina.
